Active Member - A fully initiated member of a fraternity or sorority. Alumnus (m)/Alumna (f) [plural: Alumni (m) Alumnae (f)] - A member of a fraternity/sorority who has graduated from college. Bid - An invitation of membership from a fraternity/sorority to a rushee/potential new member. Brother - A term used by initiated members in a fraternity when referring to each other. Chapter - A general term for a fraternity/sorority. The term chapter is often preceded by a Greek letter or letters, designating the order of the fraternity/sorority establishment nationally (ie: Alpha Chapter or Ohio Alpha Chapter). Chapter Meeting - A meeting of all members of a fraternity/sorority, usually held weekly, to discuss general issues of the fraternity/sorority management, as well as upcoming events, activities, or responsibilities of the fraternity/sorority, both internal and external. Fraternity/Sorority - A group of men/women bound together by common goals and rituals. Greek - A member of a fraternity or sorority. Independent - A person who is not a member of a fraternity or sorority Initiation Ceremony - The formal ritual ceremony in which pledges/new members become active members, and fully enter into the brotherhood/sisterhood of the fraternity/sorority. IFC - Interfraternity Council, the representative governing body of all fraternities on campus who participate in the council. Lavaliere - When a member of a fraternity gives a Greek letter charm which bears the Greek letters of his fraternity to a woman. Legacy (slang: Leg) - A rushee of a fraternity who is the son/daughter, brother/sister, or other relative of a member of the fraternity or sorority. New Member - A trial member (usually Freshmen undergraduates) of a sorority, who is working to become an initiate (active member) of the chosen sorority. New Member Ceremony - The formal ceremony which begins the new member period for potential new members, in which an oath or pledge is given to active members of the sorority. Panhel - Panhellenic Council, the representative governing body of all sororities on campus who participate in the council. Pin/Badge (n) - The member pinbadge is worn on the chest designating an initiate of a fraternity/sorority. Pin design is structured to indicate if a member is an active or pledge/new member of the said fraternity/sorority. Pin (v) - When a member of a fraternity gives his fraternity Pin/Badge to a woman. Pledge - A trial member (usually Freshmen undergraduates) of a fraternity, who is working to become an initiate (active member) of the chosen fraternity. Pledge Ceremony - The formal ceremony which begins the pledging period for rushees, in which an oath or pledge is given to the active members of a fraternity. Potential New Member - A woman interested or who has expressed interest in becoming a member of a sorority. Recruitment - The activity or activities by which a sorority seeks new members. Rush - The activity or activities by which a fraternity seeks new members. Rushee - A man interested or who has expressed interest in becoming a member of a fraternity. Sister - A term used by initiated members in a sorority when referring to each other. |
